1988 – 2018: 30 years after the “Hesperia Mutiny”

April 28, 1988 represents a historical episode of the utmost importance. On this date, the FC Barcelona first team squad, who had won the Copa del Rey title less than a month ago, decided to meet at the aforementioned hotel, in order to present a statement on the performance of the football club to the one they work for who refused to pay the taxes and the fines derived from inspection actions by the Tax Agency that that 1987/88 season began a series of inspections in the tax returns of players like Schuster, and they saw that among what he declared the player and what the club declared there was a significant discrepancy.

The German player declared that he earned 25 million pesetas, and here an irregularity was detected by the Tax Agency that affected all the players in the first team, and this derived from the management of image rights, and the low tax withholding carried out by the Barça club.

The statement contained 7 points and in them allusion was made to the following aspects that we quote briefly:

1.- That the template was united;
2.- That the staff had lost confidence in President Núñez;
3.- That President Núñez had not fulfilled the agreed commitments;
4.- That President Núñez caused the rupture between the fans and the squad;
5.- That President Núñez had not spoken to the players of the first team for 3 months, nor did he congratulate them on the Copa del Rey title obtained in March 1988;
6.- That the President did not have his Board of Directors;
7.- The claim to recover the seriousness of the historical club and its values as identifiers of the idiosyncrasy of the Catalan people.

As we can see, the statement did not mention the problems with the Tax Agency, because what really bothered the Barça players was that President Núñez did not want to know anything about the personal tax problems of each player, while Mendoza as President of Real Madrid was up to date with the payment of taxes as well as in the daily management of the first white team. In this sense, the international players Zubizarreta, Julio Alberto, Alexanco, Víctor Muñoz (in the image together with the lawyer author of this article), Carrasco and some others usually coincided in the selection with Butragueño, Michel, Martín Vázquez, Gallego or Camacho and therefore they knew first-hand the difference between the management of one club and another.

As a final reading, we can say that FC Barcelona, 30 years later, continues to have legal problems of tax origin (Messi, Mascherano, Neymar...) and seems not to have learned the history lived 3 decades ago.
